Another way to use content from one application in another is to create a new object from another application in your open file This will place content from another application in your file and give you access to that application s tools for use in editing the object Why would you do this Imagine that Excel data in your Word document again Wouldn t it be great to be able to doubleclick the Excel data in the document and have Excel tools appear in the Word window so you could edit the data and perform Excel tasks, such as creating formulas and formatting numbers If you ve placed an Excel chart in a PowerPoint presentation, the ability to use Excel s charting tools to edit it is of obvious value, and such power is only possible through the embedding of one application s object into another application s file To do this, follow these steps: 1 In the target file (the file that will contain the other application s object), click to place your cursor where the object should appear once inserted 2 Choose Insert | Object The Object dialog box appears

Inventory to sell, assets you use in your company, and other complex information can be easily absorbed in the form of a datasheet Datasheets organize information in the form of rows and columns, and are a way of viewing the contents of a list in rows and columns, much like a web page table or a spreadsheet Viewing data in the form of a datasheet has another big advantage: it enables you to connect the data to Microsoft Office Access and Excel

3 Click the Create New tab to insert a blank object You ll be able to fill the object (say, an Excel worksheet or a Word document) later 4 Select the object type you want to insert You ll have a list that includes objects from every Windows application on your computer, not just Office 2003 applications 5 Click OK to insert the object As shown in Figure 2-11, an object appears in your file The object can be edited right away, or you can click away from it to deselect it and then return to the open file s application tools to continue working on the target file When you re ready to edit the object, just double-click it to display its native application tools You can choose to display the embedded object as an icon, which takes up less space than the actual content you re embedding It also leaves it up to the person viewing the file that contains the embedded content whether to explore that content If they choose to view it, all they have to do is double-click the icon, and the embedded content is fully displayed

Using the Apache web server, it is possible to password protect parts of the document tree with http authentication (discussed further in 12) Authentication requires users to log in to a web site in a similar way to logging in to the Linux machine they need a username and password These username/password values are usually stored in a file on the system This file must be readable by the user who processes the http requests (usually the user named nobody) Apache can also use passwords from external databases such as Oracle or LDAP Each line of the file is one record with a username and that user s encrypted password separated by a colon These Apache password files may use the same encryption as /etc/passwd either DES or MD5

To open a list in Access Web Datasheet, you need to have Microsoft Internet Explorer 501 with Service Pack 2 or later Your browser security settings must support running ActiveX controls Office Live s documentation states you need to have Microsoft Office 2007 installed However, I was able to work with datasheets with Office 2003 installed
